Santa Barbara - America's Riviera

Santa Barbara offers escape and relaxation, along with opportunities to contemplate the ocean, mountains, and engaging vistas, and to explore a bit of history. Visit Santa Barbara at any time of year and experience the rich Spanish heritage in the city’s distinctive architecture, red tile roofs, and mission-style adobes. Santa Barbara enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate that is generally mild and sunny all 12 months of the year, with relatively stable temperatures; there is no real “off-season.”

Santa Barbara County is famous around the world for its breathtaking setting. Natural beauty beams from the dramatic mix of mountains, valleys, beaches, islands, and the sea. The area offers a multitude of activities for active and passive vacationers: everything from swimming, boating, hiking, and sports fishing to the more exotic jet skiing, kayaking, whale-watching, windsurfing, horseback riding, and more.

Inspired perhaps by this ravishing scenery, Santa Barbara County’s cultural arts scene is one of our star attractions. Visitors can enjoy world-class performances of music, opera, dance, and theater year round. Santa Barbara is also a hotbed for the visual arts with a reputation as one of the top five art colonies in the West.

Blessed with this bounty of natural treasures and rich cultural diversity, no wonder the county is a hotspot for world-class dining. Few cities in the world boast as many restaurants per capita as Santa Barbara. Creative mouth-watering cuisine is prepared with fresh local produce and paired with superb vintages from the Santa Barbara Wine Country.

Located less than an hour from Santa Barbara, in the Santa Ynez Valley, lays Santa Barbara’s wine country. Recognized as one of the world’s premium wine-producing regions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals, the county is home to more than 60 wineries and some 20,000 acres of planted vineyards. Situated 29 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys share a microclimate uniquely suited to growing a wide variety of robust grapes. With warm, sunny days and cool evenings, these funnel-shaped valleys draw cool ocean breezes from the Pacific. This marine influence keeps yields low but quality high. Wine culture in the area actually goes back more than 200 years, when Spanish missionaries brought in the first grapevines from Mexico. Today, wine is the largest agricultural industry in Santa Barbara County. For more information, contact the Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association (805-688-0881) or visit: www.sbcountywines.com.
